Topic: The underground path to resilience

Cities currently house more than half of the world's population, and by 2050, this number is expected to rise dramatically. With increasing urbanization, cities face significant challenges, including the need for sufficient and appropriate infrastructure, particularly transportation infrastructure. Projects involving urban mobility are extremely complicated since they attract, impact, and, as a result, engage a wide range of stakeholders. Tunnelling in an urban environment presents many unique challenges including space constraints, impacts on existing structures, surface traffic, and perturbation of the everyday life of the city's residents. Besides, public owners are taking the environmental impact of their projects more and more seriously. As a result, both designers and contractors need to tackle this arising concern and find solutions to increase resiliency of their projects. The main challenge consists in identifying the hazards that could jeopardize the durability of the project soon enough to be able to confront them. Once the target has been outpointed, expert collaboration and rigorous study of the case in its context will allow us to seize the opportunity to change the industry pattern and develop our project within a sustainable frame. Designing a new path into this transformation will however imply a social mind-set change. The engineering private sector is beginning to accept the challenge of participating of this new commitment, enhancing infrastructure resiliency. Environmental considerations are now central to tunnelling projects. Advanced construction techniques help minimize surface disturbance and habitat disruption. Real-time monitoring systems together with artificial intelligence and predictive analytics are being used to optimize maintenance schedules and detect potential issues before they escalate. Embracing a circular economy approach promotes the reuse, recycling, and repurposing of materials to reduce overall environmental footprint.
