Amberg Technical Exchange Forum and TSP User Conference Successfully Held in Wuhan
On June 12, 2026, Amberg Technologies (Wuhan) Co., Ltd., together with China Railway Engineering Equipment Group (CREG), hosted the Amberg Technical Exchange Forum and TSP User Conference in Wuhan, China.
The event brought together over 100 experts, researchers, industry partners and TSP users from China, Switzerland, Norway, India and Australia. Representatives from universities, engineering consultancies, technology providers, equipment manufacturers and tunnel construction companies gathered to exchange insights on the future of intelligent tunnelling and underground infrastructure development.
The forum focused on the topic “Today’s Intelligent Integrations for Tunnelling – The Core Competencies of TSP and TBM: An Indispensable Alliance for Tomorrow”, highlighting the growing importance of integrating advanced geological prediction, tunnel boring technologies, artificial intelligence and digital workflows to support safer, more efficient and more predictable underground construction.
Bringing Together Global Expertise
Throughout the day, experts from industry and academia delivered presentations covering a wide range of topics related to geological prediction, tunnel construction and digital transformation. Highlights included:
- Dr. Georg Erharter (WSP Norway) presenting new approaches to predicting TBM behaviour through the combined analysis of TBM operational data and TSP information.
- Prof. Bai Yun (Tongji University) discussing the current development of AI-enabled TBM tunnelling technologies in China.
- Dr. Thomas Dickmann (Amberg Technologies AG) showcasing international applications of the TSP 603 system and demonstrating how continuous geological prediction can be integrated into TBM operations to improve project safety and efficiency.
- Saurabh Upadhyay (Amberg Technologies at Amberg Engineering India, designated successor to Dr. Thomas Dickmann) presenting on the application of statistics & artificial intelligence application to TSP dataset and its growing impact on geological prediction workflows.
- Experts from universities, engineering companies and technology providers presenting innovations in tunnel imaging, laser-based inspection, digital twins, intelligent monitoring and AI-assisted geological forecasting.
TSP and TBM: From Collaboration to Integration
A central topic throughout the conference was the growing convergence of TSP and TBM technologies.
Participants discussed how advanced geological prediction can be more closely integrated into tunnelling operations, enabling a transition from isolated workflows toward a connected “Explore – Excavate – Control” approach. Topics included real-time risk assessment, automated data processing, wireless communication, AI-assisted interpretation and intelligent decision support.
The discussions reflected a broader industry trend: moving beyond data collection toward actionable intelligence that supports safer, more predictable and more efficient tunnelling projects.
Strengthening Amberg’s Position in Intelligent Tunnelling
As a gesture of appreciation, all keynote speakers were presented with a special Amberg “health hammer”, inspired by the traditional Chinese Baifu hammer used for body massage and relaxation. The gift created a thoughtful cultural connection with Amberg’s TSP technology: while the TSP Impact Hammer supports advance geological prediction by generating seismic signals on tunnel walls, the health hammer offered a friendly and memorable local interpretation of the concept of “impact”.
The event also marked an important moment for Amberg’s TSP team, as Johannes Müller officially announced that Saurabh Upadhyay will succeed Dr. Thomas Dickmann following his retirement after 30 years of heading Geophysics at Amberg Technologies.
As underground infrastructure projects continue to grow in complexity, the integration of geological prediction, digital workflows and intelligent decision-making will play an increasingly important role in improving safety, efficiency and project predictability. The successful event in Wuhan further strengthened Amberg Technologies’ position as a trusted partner in geological prediction and tunnel engineering, while creating new opportunities for international cooperation and future innovation.
